Dear Parents,

I would like to congratulate our BIS team of 4 students (The Codey Bunch) who were the proud winners of the Global Cotheathon last Saturday. BIS Hanoi hosted the event which enjoyed participation from Concordia, HIS, TH School, BVIS, St Paul American School, Word STEM Club, BIS HCMC and Northbridge in Cambodia.

Global Codeathon 13

The task was to write a game with a theme of World’s Oceans, which links to the Global Goal, Sustainable Development. This was an exciting opportunity for students to find coding solutions to real life problems. The teams were presented with the task at 10am and given a 2:30pm deadline for submission. There was a buzz of activity in our new learning hub, located in our library and some excellent ideas generated. The best teams showed a high degree of collaboration and good team work which is essential when trying to produce ambitious work. Well done everyone! Thank you to all the BIS staff who supported the event and to Mr Allison, Mr Toner and Mr Trett for organizing this challenge.

Next year, we aim to provide more opportunities for our students as we enter an exciting partnership with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). STEAM education is at the forefront of the educational world as we know it. Although not a new concept, it is becoming increasingly important as it is seen as an integrated approach; full of the key skills that students will need to solve the problems of the future. STEAM takes the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and blends them all together in problem solving tasks that will better prepare our students for the world that they will graduate into. It involves elements of design and robotics and if we are looking to the future we want our students to be the ones who find the solutions to the problems that our world is facing, such as pollution, overcrowding, sustainable development, food production and more.

Mr Toner (Head of IT) and Mr Russell (Maths teacher) will be visiting MIT next week to attend workshops and learn more about the activities offered. This partnership will result in more challenges for our students and the possibility of student visits to MIT.
