Why English as an Additional Language Sets Your Child Up for Global Success
In today’s interconnected world, strong English skills support academic success, cultural understanding and future career opportunities. At BIS Houston, our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme does more than teach words - it helps students build confidence, resilience and a positive attitude toward learning.
Why EAL Matters
For many families, moving to an international school means adapting to a new language and culture. Our EAL programme ensures your child feels supported from day one, helping them thrive in every subject while developing essential communication skills. With our guidance, students quickly gain confidence and feel a true sense of belonging in their new school community.
Being bilingual is a real superpower. It helps students think more flexibly, solve problems creatively, and understand people from different cultures. Knowing two or more languages opens doors to new opportunities and makes the world feel bigger and more connected.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Real Success Stories
Students like Olivia, Farah and Oliver show what’s possible in our EAL programme. As our Students of the Month, Olivia has grown remarkably in her communication skills, while Oliver’s resilience and ambition have helped him make confident progress in English. Farah has been an outstanding learner. Their achievements inspire others and highlight the strength of our EAL approach.
Many students who have graduated from the EAL programme go on to achieve num, erous successes. They take part in international competitions, present at assemblies and perform confidently in school events. Their accomplishments show how strong language skills can open doors to exciting opportunities.
The Global Advantage
Strong English skills help students succeed at top universities and in international careers. By taking EAL now, your child gains a lifelong advantage in a world where language opens doors. Our EAL team also prepares students for Cambridge exams, IELTS Academic and TOEFL, and we stay up to date with all modern requirements.
Leadership Opportunities
Our EAL students have many leadership opportunities that help them grow in confidence and responsibility. We regularly offer Young Interpreters courses, where students learn how to support and guide their peers. They also take part in real-life writing tasks, such as creating meaningful letters and handing them in to members of our school community. Through these activities, the EAL team helps students build strong communication skills, take initiative, and become positive role models for others.
Our EAL teachers support students in developing strong speaking and presentation skills. They help students prepare clear, confident speeches and teach effective oracy techniques, also practise debating, persuasive speaking, and descriptive tasks.

Our EAL teachers are always happy to answer questions about how you can support your child at home, and they stay in regular contact with families. This close communication helps ensure that every student feels supported both in school and at home.
