Juilliard Alumni Visit - Michal Emanovsky at BISB

Michal Emanovsky began playing horn in his native Czech Republic and in 1994 received a full scholarship to study at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California with financial support from the Foundation for a Civil Society. Four years later, he was accepted at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he completed his Bachelor of Music degree under the tutelage of Myron Bloom and Jerome Ashby. Michal concluded his studies at the Juilliard School in New York where he received a Master of Music degree in the studio of William Purvis.

Michal is currently serving as associate principal horn of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He previously served as principal horn of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra and as guest principal horn with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra as well as many others.  He has appeared as a soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra.

Before leaving the US, Michal performed chamber music in Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and at the Miller Theatre of Columbia University in New York. He has played with the International Contemporary Ensemble and also collaborated with Pierre Boulez in a performance of his work with the Argento Ensemble. In Korea, Michal was a guest artist with the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music, the Great Mountains Music Festival and regularly performs chamber music in all of the major performance venues in Seoul.

He has received honors at several competitions, including third prize at the Young Artist’s Competition in California and was a recipient of the Leni FeBland Award and the Irene Diamond Memorial Scholarship. Festivals that Michal has participated in include Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the National Jeugd Orkest in Holland, and the Festival Dei due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy.

Beside performing, Michal spends his time teaching at the Korea National University of Arts where he is an adjunct faculty member.  He founded and actively maintains a facebook group “Horn post” to share horn related information and bring Korean horn players closer to each other.  With the help of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, he organizes masterclasses for Korean horn students to give them a chance to gather valuable knowledge from internationally acclaimed artists free of charge.
