This month, Key Stage 3 students took part in the University of Waterloo’s Gauss Contest, which is a multiple-choice competition whose goal is ‘for students to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem-solving ability’.

There are two levels: the Grade 7 contest was sat by our Year 7 & 8 students, and the Year 9s sat the Grade 8 contest. There were many interesting problems on this year’s competition, and the students noted that you need to be creative to be able to solve the most difficult of them.

The top three scorers in each year group received a certificate to recognise their achievement.

Congratulations to…

Grade 7: Kwanjin Kim (Y8) with a score of 136, Penelope Wortberg (Y7) with 128, Yoon Koo (Y7) with 123, Yookyum Kim & Sebastian Kot (Y7) with 114, Dayeon Nam (Y8) with 110, and Mykhaylo Chernov & Hyeokwon Kim (Y8) with 109.

Grade 8: Ivan Danilov (Y9) with a score of 126, Maxim Khabliev (Y9) with 123, and Darius Vicovan (Y9) with 120.

Year 10 & 12 students on the Maths Team took part in the Pascal and Fermat contests, respectively, from the University of Waterloo. The best scorers in our school each received a medal and were Inwoo Song (Y10) with a score of 124 and Lujie Yu (Y12) with 90.
