When you walk into our Early Years classrooms at BISB, you might see children building towering block structures, experimenting with water and funnels, creating imaginative worlds in role-play areas, or collaborating on a creative project. At first glance, it may look like they're simply having fun.

When Does the Real Learning Begin?

As an international school welcoming families from many different educational backgrounds, we are often asked: "When do children start real learning?"

Consider a child building a tower from wooden blocks.

They are not simply stacking pieces on top of one another. They are exploring balance, gravity, spatial awareness and early mathematical concepts. When the tower falls, they analyse what happened, adjust their strategy and try again.

In that moment, they are developing problem-solving skills, resilience, critical thinking and emotional regulation.

Or picture a group of children creating a pretend doctor's surgery.

As they negotiate roles, solve disagreements and invent storylines together, they are expanding their vocabulary, strengthening communication skills and learning how to collaborate. At the same time, they are building empathy, confidence and self-awareness.

Play transforms abstract ideas into meaningful experiences, helping children understand concepts in ways that worksheets simply cannot replicate.

The world our children will enter continues to evolve at an incredible pace. While knowledge remains important, the future will increasingly value skills such as creativity, adaptability, collaboration and independent thinking.

These are exactly the qualities nurtured through purposeful play.
