Classroom technology is transforming how our students learn. Amazing innovations like iPads, programmable robotics, and virtual reality simulations provide access to a world of information and interactive experiences.
Used smartly – and properly integrated into learning – these technologies unlock endless possibilities. So, how do we make the most of technology in the classroom – and beyond – at BIS Charlotte? In this article, we share some examples and discuss the benefits for your child.
The growing role of technology in the classroom
There has always been technology in the classroom. From books to projectors to interactive whiteboards, humans have sought out and used the latest learning tools for as long as we’ve had formal education.
In the past decade, however, the traditional classroom has been transformed by technology. This evolution is not just a trend, but a fundamental shift in how we approach teaching and learning.
Today, classroom technology is integral to delivering a 21st century education. From tablets and laptops to online learning platforms and virtual reality simulations, technology is woven into the fabric of every student’s learning experience. It’s also key to helping our young people develop the skills they need for the future.
Using technology in the right way
It’s easy to get carried away by the myriad uses and possibilities of interactive education technology (EdTech). And that’s why, at BIS Charlotte, we use technology in a considered way. We make sure it’s properly integrated into teaching and learning. We also make sure it adds tangible value to your child’s experience.
For example, technology – no matter how good – should never be used as a substitute for face-to-face interaction with a teacher or classmates. For us, technology is most effective when being deployed to augment non-digital lessons, rather than the other way around.
Ultimately, our goal when using classroom technology is to enhance teaching, rather than replace it.
The benefits of technology in the classroom
There are, of course, many benefits to technology in the classroom. From increased engagement to more inclusive environments, the application of EdTech can improve a wide range of learning outcomes.
Engaging learning experiences
One of the key benefits of classroom technology is that it can provide a more dynamic learning experience. The interactivity of an iPad, for example, can draw a student in, capturing their interest and encouraging them to learn.
EdTech can help your child become an active learner, too, through online educational games, challenges, and immersive virtual reality. Interestingly, research shows that challenge-based gamification can improve performance by up to 89%.
Technology also helps our teachers to present subjects in more interactive and creative ways. This ensures our students are engaged and motivated.
Opportunities for collaboration
Classroom technology provides fantastic opportunities for collaboration and communication.
Online learning platforms, for example, create virtual communities where students can share ideas, ask questions, and get feedback from their peers and teachers. This includes Nord Anglia’s groundbreaking Global Campus platform, which connects our learners to more than 70,000 peers worldwide.
Your child will also use iPads to work with friends on projects, while interactive whiteboards in every classroom encourage thoughtful collaboration.
Personalized learning
Technology helps us to personalize instruction and meet the needs of diverse learners. Students learn via online videos, audiobooks, interactive online games, and more, all at their own pace.
Adaptive learning software also creates customized pathways for individual students, based on their strengths and areas for improvement. This can help them to feel more connected to the material and encourage them to take ownership of their learning.
The use of technology in our classrooms also:
- Expands learning into your home, through online lessons, activities, and resources your child can access at any time.
- Prepares your child for the future, helping them develop the digital skills they need at university and beyond.
How we use classroom technology at BIS Charlotte
Our students have access to an array of technology, which is carefully integrated into our curriculum to create memorable experiences and develop vital skills.
All our classrooms have iPads, touchscreen monitors, and interactive whiteboards. These encourage digital communication, collaboration, and the development of technical skills.
Our dedicated STEAM Maker Space is home to a raft of state-of-the-art equipment, including 3D printers, programmable robotics, and drones. Learning is enhanced by our cutting-edge collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), too.
Our teachers use technology creatively in lessons. This includes educational math apps, interactive screens for handwriting lessons, and digital cameras in art classes.
The responsible use of classroom technology
Of course, we want your child to use technology responsibly. Our approach to EdTech is very much a balanced one, which emphasizes the importance of real-world experiences and time away from screens.
We also understand our role in helping young people navigate the challenges of the digital world. Our Skills for Life program, for example, includes a module on internet safety.
So, how does technology help our students learn?
Technology in the classroom enhances student engagement and fosters a more interactive learning environment. It provides unique opportunities for our teachers to engage your child in hands-on, experiential learning. It also facilitates collaboration and communication, and can be used to personalize instruction to the needs of diverse learners.
We’re also very aware, however, that classroom technology is just one tool among many. And we know how important it is to find the right balance between the use of technology and other strategies. Doing this ensures your child benefits from a diverse, engaging, and stimulating experience – one that makes them feel excited about coming into school every day.
