At BVIS Hanoi, sport is more than just a subject – it's a stage for life’s most powerful lessons. Just ask Miss Ellie Dunford, a whole school Physical Education (PE) teacher whose energy, heart and belief in the transformative power of sport have helped shape countless student journeys.
This year at the Nord Anglia Education Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games), Miss Ellie witnessed something much more than competition: she saw courage, growth and resilience come alive through every sprint, catch and team talk.
“Honestly, the events that are run like this help our children grow more than just sportspeople. They help them grow so, so much confidence,” she said. “Getting to the airport without their parents – that alone is such a big deal for these kids. Then they go out there and compete, connect and reflect. They come home different.”
The SEA Games bring together students from Nord Anglia Education schools from across Southeast Asia, offering a unique opportunity for camaraderie, competition and personal discovery. For Miss Ellie, it’s not just about winning or losing – it's about those “core memories” that stay with her students long after the medals are handed out.
“We had a loss in T-ball, but the kids came together afterwards and told me everything they learned. They didn’t care about the loss – they were high-fiving each other, and celebrating being a team. That was my highlight.”
These special moments reflect something greater: the BVIS Hanoi commitment to nurturing whole students. The SEA Games, like many Nord Anglia Education experiences, are a living classroom – one that builds confidence, independence and a global mindset.
“Some of my students were exchanging currency abroad for the first time. It was such an enlightening experience. They did it themselves, asked others for help. That’s when you see them growing into global citizens.”
Miss Ellie recently transitioned from a larger school to BVIS Hanoi, which she said opened the door to a deep sense of belonging.
“For me, the sense of community at BVIS Hanoi is exceptional. Inside work and outside of it, the people are there for you. Colleagues become friends. The kids speak to you as a teacher, but also as a friend. It’s a home away from home – away from home.”
And the community spirit extends well beyond the school gates: “Even at the SEA Games we’re a smaller team. But the students from the other schools adopted us straight away. That’s the spirit of Nord Anglia Education schools – you're never alone. The connections, the friendships, the support – it’s something special.”
In every high five, in every quiet post-match moment, and in every new experience faced, the students at BVIS Hanoi are writing their own stories of growth, courage and connection, building lifelong memories. And thanks to dedicated teachers like Miss Ellie, they’re learning that the real victory lies in becoming their best selves, together.
