Learning about food and healthy living

In Term Three, our Year 1 children will be exploring the exciting topic “We Are What We Eat”. They will learn about the different food groups and their functions, helping them to understand how to eat a balanced diet and keep their bodies healthy. As part of this topic, the children will also discover foods from around the world, learning about different cultures and cuisines. In addition, they will explore where food comes from by looking at how we grow food – from planting seeds to harvesting crops. This hands-on learning will help children appreciate the journey of food from farm to table. To round off the term, the children will take part in a special assembly to showcase their learning through songs, performances, and creative presentations. It promises to be a fun and engaging way to celebrate all they have discovered about food and healthy living!

They’ll learn about who pirates were, what life was like aboard a pirate ship, and explore famous tales of buried treasure. Through engaging activities such as storytelling, map-making, crafts, and drama, the children will develop their reading, writing, and creative skills while having lots of fun along the way. This term, Year 5 will be learning about the Human Body. In IPC, they will be learning about the organs that help us sense the world and what happens when they don’t work correctly. In STEAM, they will be learning about how different organs of the body work together to create systems. In their English and Vietnamese lessons, Year 5 will be writing Explanation and Information texts explaining how these systems work.

Fairgrounds

We have launched our new IPC topic Fairgrounds with a magical twist! To spark curiosity and creativity, students explored the world of magicians and entertainers—an important part of any traditional fairground. As part of the introduction, they investigated how optical illusions work and how our brains can be fooled by what we see. Students were then introduced to a simple magic trick designed to challenge their thinking and observation skills. Later in the week, all classes will have the chance to learn and practise their own magic trick, building their confidence, communication, and performance abilities as they prepare to share it with their peers. It's been a fun and engaging way to step into this new unit!

Exam Season is here!

I hope you all had a restful and positive Spring Beak. Returning to school for our final term of 2024/25 has begun with exam season!

Our Year 11 and 13 students are now undertaking their IGCSE and A Level exams. These mark the culmination of 2 years of hard work and we wish our students the very best of luck in these important assessments.

Our Year 10 and 12 students have begun their 2 week programme of Mock Exams. These will give an important indication of progress for our students and allow them to identify both areas of strength and areas for development.

Finally, KS3 students will have an assessment week from the 19th to the 23rd May. This will offer our youngest students the opportunity to experience a planned series of exams which assess their progress in various subject areas. The assessments will cover work from the full year and will be held under formal exam conditions. We know this will feel a little daunting but know that this experience will be beneficial for students in terms of both revision, exam technique and assessing their progress across the year.

Top Tips for Revision

Effective revision is key to success at all levels from KS3 to A level. Here are some top tips to help students prepare confidently:

  1. Create a Revision Plan: Break down topics into manageable chunks and allocate specific times. A structured timetable helps avoid last-minute cramming.
  2. Use Variety of Resources: Mix textbooks, notes, past papers, and online resources. Different formats reinforce understanding and keep revision engaging. Your Teams for each subject will have an abundance of great resources.
  3. Practice Past Papers: This is particularly important for KS4 and KS5 students. We recommend that students simulate exam conditions by doing timed past papers. This builds familiarity with question styles and improves time management.
  4. Summarise and Condense: Make concise notes, mind maps, or flashcards. Summarising helps you focus on key concepts and retain information better.
  5. Stay Active and Rested: Regular breaks, exercise, and good sleep boost concentration and memory. Avoid late-night cramming!
  6. Ask for Help: If you're stuck, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from teachers. Clarifying doubts early saves stress later.
Remember, consistent effort and a positive attitude make a big difference. Good luck - you've got this!

Y11 and Y13 – the importance of coming into school during exams

It is really important that all year 11 and 13 students have continued attendance at school over the exam season. Attending school during the exam period, to support study, has many significant benefits for students;

  • Attending school provides students with structure and routine during their revision efforts. It ensures that they are up early and work throughout the day, taking appropriate breaks.
  • Attending classes will allow students the opportunity to have support from their teachers. Our staff are subject experts and can support and guide students with their revision. They can provide excellent resources and ongoing feedback
  • Coming into school can also keep students motivated and positive. Teachers and peers can provide support and encouragement which is vital at this time.

We know from years of experience, that students who seek support with their revision from school staff, perform well in their exams. I would like to ask all students to continue to attend school throughout their exams and take up the offer of the excellent support which is offered by the BVIS team.

Global Campus Art Competition Update

We announced our school winners of the competition a few weeks ago, and we then sent those entries off to be judged in the global competition. Over 12,000 Nord Anglia students took part in the art competition, and 142 entries were submitted in the global competition, from 58 school campuses.
A panel of guest judges has now narrowed this down to a list of just 16 entries. We are now extremely proud and excited to announce that Lam Anh Trinh in 9V and her art piece Scars has been one of the shortlisted entries in the 11-14 age category!

You can take a look at the final 16 entries by accessing the Art Competition page on Global Campus.

The final 16 art pieces have been sent to the guest judge, Laura Watkins. She will choose the overall winner and runner-up per age category, so everyone at BVIS wishes Lam Anh all the best in the final judging process!
