The DCIS students who are part of our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme have been working extremely hard together with their teachers during their virtual school experience, DOT - Dover Ongoing Teaching.
During DOT the children in Year 1 have been reading lots of stories. By sequencing pictures and making story maps to retell stories, the children had a go at writing their own stories by creating new characters. In Year 2, the children have been reading about “The Bear who came to Babysit” and other bear stories. How silly wouldn't it be to have a bear as a babysitter? The children enjoyed making beautiful Vesak lanterns, as well as learning how to plan stories and playing ‘talking’ games.
The students in Year 3 created a storyboard titled “Escape from a Tornado”. They revised their sentences by adding adjectives and adverbs to make the story more interesting. A fun task appreciated by all! In Year 4, the students have been studying the novel assigned for English, “The Firework-Maker’s Daughter”. They created a storyboard for chapters 3 and 4 and also drew their favourite firework display from the end of the novel and added descriptive labels to their drawings.
In Year 5, the students have been writing structured balanced arguments, discussing the pros and cons of doing homework every day as well as looking at the advantages and disadvantages of children watching television daily. The students come up with some brilliant arguments! The Year 6 students have been writing non-chronological reports about a fictional planet called Pandora. The students created an introduction, three information paragraphs and included pictures with captions.
The Secondary students have been reading different newspaper articles, learning new vocabulary and completing tasks for comprehension. They have also been practising their presentation skills by talking about the books they are reading and answering questions about them. Finally they have been completing our ‘Daily Journal’ about these weeks that we have been doing DOT learning at home!
Great work, EAL!
