Long-tailed Macaques, Kahoots, Memes, Code-Breaking, Tesla shares, Minecraft, U.N Sustainable Development Goals, Reading, Rangoli Patterns and Underreported Black History... we truly are a community with inclusion at its heart!

Houses at DCIS have a steady track-record of enriching the lives of our students. With the easing of pandemic restrictions in Singapore, we have begun to amplify school spirit and promote the Dover Court values through a broad range of House events.

The academic year started with the appointment of a House committee consisting of students from every year group in the school. We then had a month of memes posted on the House Google Classroom. The popular weekly House challenge has evolved into a Kahoot quiz with last half term’s themes staying true to the diverse nature of the school: DCIS History, The House Animals, Singapore, Asia, World Mental Health Day, The British Monarchy and Rosh Hashanah.

Toward the end of September, the Faculty of Mathematics facilitated a hugely successful FOBISIA Code Breaking challenge. Jurong took the lion’s share of the 90 Competition House Points allocated to this event, scoring 40.

The Faculty of Enterprise relaunched the tremendously popular Dover Court Stock Exchange. This involves an investment simulation league with participants having 500,000 U.S dollars to invest in the American market. This year's competition ends during the penultimate week of Term 1 and currently has 241 entrants managing their portfolios. A reminder that parents and other family members are able to join this competition after making a $6.00 donation to our fundraising for The Assisi Hospice. At the time of writing, Connor (Year 10, Jurong) leads the pack with an account value of (an imaginary) $938,470.63. Interestingly, Connor is closely followed by students from each of the other three houses, namely Tin (Year 12, Ubin) and Boris (Year 10, Kranji), Liam (Year 9, Newton).

The Faculty of Enterprise led a Year 10 Drop Down Day that was designed to enable students to critically engage with the commercial world through objective-led thinking. There was a focus on the UN Sustainable Development goals, an in-person guest speaker on stage for a session titled: Insights From a Tech CEO -  Mr. Arvind Lakshmikumar.  House teams collaborated to build a prototype home/settlement on Minecraft Education which highlighted issues related to sustainability, lifestyle and inequality - UN Sustainable Development Goal 11. The Enterprise themed Drop Down Day culminated in a lively debate in Cooper Hall: This House believes that Billionaires are bad for developing nations. Under modified parliamentary rules and with the support of Ms. Kothari and Ms. Meredith, Anwita (Kranji) and Dev (Jurong) spoke in proposition against Austen (Newton) and Mena (Ubin) who spoke in opposition to the motion. After some thoroughly well-researched statements and rebuttals, the floor was opened for questions from a multitude of energised Year 10 students. The audience and the speakers can all be proud of their contributions but, on this occasion, it was Kranji and Jurong who emerged winners.

The Faculty of English launched a reading competition, and the Faculty of Humanities ran a Deepavali Rangoli Pattern competition (mentioned in this edition of the Newsletter). The half term and month of October finished with an essay related to Black History Month. We look forward to announcing the winner next week.

This half term, members of the Dover Court community can look forward to an equally diverse mix of events that include:

World Cup Fantasy Football

World Cup Score Prediction Competition

Monologue competition

Languages week

Interhouse Sports Games

As ever, details of all House Competitions are shared via our dedicated Google Classroom.
