The Global Classroom Debate Champions 2014

06 June 2014

Congratulations to Arkadiy Osovtsov and his team of IB debaters for their strong performance throughout the debate season and, especially on being the first Nord Anglia Education Global Classroom Debate Champions!

  • Flags
At the end of May students from Bratislava and Pudong went head to head in the Debate Grand Final to see which school would be crowned Global Classroom Debating Champion for 2014.

The motion was challenging...

‘Attempts to extend radically the human lifespan should be welcomed, not feared’

... and both teams impressed the judges with the number of arguments they presented and the range evidence they used to support them. The judges also commented on the positive and respectful way the two teams communicated with each other. In many ways, both teams are winners and should be very proud of their achievements.

What the judges said:

Athina Vlachantoni

Dr Athina Vlachantoni (Senior Lecturer in Gerontology) about Bratislava

‘The team’s arguments were based on a wide spectrum of life aspects (medicine, economy, sociology). This is excellent, as it reflects the complexity of this area and the difficulty in making social policy decisions in the area of life expectancy and public health.’

Ela McSorley

Ela McSorley (Assistant Director of Student Services) about Pudong

‘Really confident and clear responses made to the arguments presented. They had a strong central argument considering the impact on society…of a growing population.’

Overall the quality of the debate was very high from both teams. However, the arguments from one side were extremely impressive and persuasive and underpinned by a strong understanding of economic theory and global resourcing. For this reason Bratislava have been declared the winners.
