An Evening of Choir Music

19 April 2018

On 28th March we hosted a choir from the UK for a special concert in the Primates Palace.  BMS Singers from Bolton in the North of England brought a strong choir of 33 vocalists who sang some very traditional British Music from Renaissance a cappella polyphony to more modern day Vaughan-Williams and made a beautiful sound.

Also performing in the concert were the senior choirs from our school, both the boys and the girls, and excitingly it was the first trip out for our Bratislava Community Choir.

The boys sang about their Cambiata vocal status as members of a 'changing voices' group, then they got their tongue in a twist with everyone's favourite volcano the Popocatepetl.  The finished strongly with Big Sing favourite from last year 'Black is the Colour' with some lovely solos in the set from Christoffer Laursen and Hadley Pound.

The girls' choir showed off their versatility with a very varied program including traditional African pieces, a beautiful sacred piece from the classical era and then more modern music from Pentatonix, finishing with an arrangement of Royals by Lorde with a wonderful solo from Sofiya Gaievska in year 8.

The boys' and girls' choirs then joined forces to perform a piece of Hungarian music in Latin 'Oh Magnum' that the students had learned recently on their Berlin trip.   Louise Laursen and Nina Dubcova provided the soaring solo lines over the top that worked beautifully in such a wonderful setting.

The community choir undoubtedly stole the show however with their program of gospel music finishing in a wonderful rendition of 'Viva La Compagnie' which saw the whole audience come together and join in. The community choir was only formed in October 2017 and includes members of the greater Bratislava International Community.  Some staff and parents from our school but others from other international schools and companies attend too.  They rehearse on a Thursday night at the school 19:00-20:30 and it is a non-auditioned choir so all can join.  They have a lot of fun singing together and this was evident on stage with the brilliant sound they made, they made it look fun too.

The community choir joined with BMS Singers to sing the joint piece 'Blest Pair of Sirens' by Hubert Parry which was sang at Westminster Abbey for the Royal Wedding in 2011.  It was a very ambitious piece but they pulled it off well and performed with great style and emotion.

Finally all of the choirs joined together to sing two African Pieces conducted by Miss Howarth.  There were over 70 voices in total and they made an amazing sound.

BMS Singers enjoyed their time with us and thanked BISB for being great hosts.  We hope that we can visit them in future.

Our next singing event is the Big Sing on Saturday 21st April at 17:00 we hope you can join us.
