ISMTF Maths Competition

ISMTF Maths Competition

On Friday 5th April Mr Shkurka accompanied six of our Year 8 and Year 9 students to the annual International School Maths Teacher Foundation (ISMTF) middle school competition.

This year the competition was hosted by Aloha College, just outside of Marbella, Spain. After arriving at the hotel on Friday afternoon the students got to know each other, and some of the other schools, a little better through some team building games on the local beach on Friday evening. Saturday saw the main day of the competition, during which our two teams (Hyeokwon/Kwanjin/Yoon and Penelope/Greg/Vivan) worked tirelessly over 10 rounds of multiple-choice, short- and long-answer questions against teams from 34 other schools across Europe and North Africa. Both teams performed admirably with the all-boys team placing 10th overall, and Penelope, Greg and Vivan coming in respectably mid-table. They were all rightly very pleased with their efforts! On Sunday morning we returned to Aloha College for the more relaxed Sunday-Chase event where our students teamed up with students from other schools to compete in an active problem-solving competition which required them to navigate around the entire college campus. Before returning to Bratislava on Monday evening, we were able to take in some of the local culture, through visiting a cinema, having a walk around the marina, and a day of sightseeing in Marbella which included a 11th century fortress and an imagination museum.

" It was really fun to work together in a team and share the exercises." Penelope

Here are some comments from the students:

The maths competition was so much fun. I had a chance to compete with other students from different schools not only from Nord Anglia and also made lots of friends - Hyeokwon

I had a lot of fun in the math competition. I met new friends from other countries and the competition was very thrilling. Also, walking in the town with my friends was great! - Yoon

The competition made me nervous at first, but, then because of Ice breakers, I could relax. It was a good experience, I could improve my math skills - Kwanjin
