We want to share our experience with the Eco-Schools project at BIS and how our participation in it is impacting us and how it is changing our community. At school, we take action to inspire BISB community to be responsible and carrying. By the workshop, we hope to inspire other Nord Anglia schools.
During the first week of preparation for the conference, our team has faced some difficult decisions that needed to be made. The problem was that to get to Dublin from Bratislava, the most obvious transportation method would be the plane. However, the question was raised whether we should not give an example by our actions, not just by our words and use greener transportation. So, the second option we looked at was a train. We researched to find more information about the impact of traveling by plane and by train.
When we compared emissions released during 1000 km flight and 1000 km train journey we found out that during the flight 80% more carbon emissions were released per person. On the other side, 27 hour journey and the cost was a huge negative of the train. Eventually, we have decided that we would travel by plane, but we made a deal that we would organise an event for planting trees and we aim to plant 1000 trees this spring. This way we want to pay back for what we have taken from the planet.
As we have been preparing for the Conference in Dublin, we have realized that we are learning lots of important things, such as teamwork, determination and collaboration. Skills that we will find useful even when the conference is over.
