Secondary Curriculum

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 follow our Key Stage Curriculum which is based on the English and Welsh National Curricula. However, as a result of having a diverse and dynamic student body, we adapt our curriculum to serve our international cohort. As such, we offer Slovak for Slovak Nationals and those students who may need Slovak in the future, as well as Korean for our Korean students. In addition to this, students can choose to study French, German or Spanish as an additional world language.

For more information on our Key Stage 3 curriculum, please see the KS3 Curriculum Guide.

igcse

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

In Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4), students study for IGCSE certificates. We use the Cambridge IGCSE courses due to their rigour, depth and breadth of study, which we feel best prepare students for the IB. These IGCSEs are recognised throughout the world and therefore aid those students who join us late or need to transfer to other international schools.

The IGCSEs are 2-year courses, after which students sit examinations in May/June. Many subjects have a coursework component in addition to the external examinations. The IGCSE results are released in August, and based on these results, students are accepted onto our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or IBDP.

For more information on our IGCSE curriculum, please see the IGCSE Curriculum Guide.

ib

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

In Years 12 and 13 (Key Stage 5), students study for the IB Diploma. This is a challenging two-year course of study which, if successful, culminates in the award of the IB Diploma. The IB Diploma is one of the most highly regarded programmes for entry into universities across the world. Some students study for IB Course Certificates option, and this decision is based on IGCSE results or other entry tests prior to joining BISB.

BISB students have outperformed the IBDP global average in the last few years. Students' scores on the IB Diploma averaged 33 points, compared to the global average of 29.6 points. 12% of BISB students scored 40 points and above which places them in the top 2% of students in the whole world.

For more information on our IB curriculum, please see the IB Curriculum Guide.
