The show must go on, as Northbridge students rehearse online for the Primary production of Moana

As they say on Broadway, “The Show Must Go On!” Regardless of circumstance, nothing gets in the way of a performance. Well, thanks to the current Covid-19 outbreak, our fine young Northbridge International School Cambodia actors are learning to put that platitude into action, and from my perspective as their director, I am beyond proud of their outstanding effort.

Northbridge International School Cambodia - Moana

Last year, as we were considering what primary musical we’d like to perform, there was a great deal of sentiment among the NISC Players to select Moana.

For those who’ve seen the movie, you understand that this is an uplifting tale of a princess from a Pacific island who breaks from tradition, and sets out to save her island from imminent disaster.

Through her journey, Moana shows strength, courage, and determination to lead her people to safety. Along the way, she builds amazing relationships with others, and finds humor throughout her quest. We thought to ourselves, “What better story is there to tell to our community during these turbulent times?”

The irony in this story is that our cast very much has found themselves on a similar adventure to Moana. Throughout our journey, our performers have shown patience, flexibility, and open-mindedness towards our ultimate outcome.

Most importantly, these amazing individuals have shown a great deal of heart, a sense of humor, and care for one another as evidenced by the life-long relationships they have built. It is clear that no matter what obstacles they face, they will step-up and do everything they can to make sure nothing gets in the way of their performance - and most importantly, that they will do it together!

Our journey has involved ever-changing rehearsal schedules both in person and online. This has involved sacrificing snack recesses, lunch recesses, and after-school leisure time. We’ve dealt with lags while singing online, and made adaptations in our staging to allow for social distancing. Throughout it all, our young stars have shined.

Many of our performers have been part of multiple prior performances, and have used their experience to guide them as they’ve shown outstanding leadership throughout. Our choreography leadership group worked hard to create dances for every number almost completely on their own.

Our lead actors and actresses have dedicated countless hours towards memorizing their lines, mastering their solos, and bringing the personalities of their characters to life. Our amazing cast parents have supported our every effort by encouraging their children to push forward, and the results are clear. Our performance is going to blow you away!

Now, we just need a little cooperation from Covid.

At this time, it is our intent to bring the culmination of our efforts to you. We will raise your spirits as we take you on Moana’s uplifting journey through song and dance. We will make you laugh, and put tears in your eyes. We are hopeful that this will take place in person - on our stage at NISC in the not-too-distant future, and will do all in our power to achieve that goal. We look forward to seeing you at the show!
