Grade 4 Camping Trip
Grade 4 had a great camping trip to He Mingshan for three days last week. As well as learning the basics of camping, they took part in a number of tasks to challenge their athleticism and courage. Our very professional guides, from Keystone Adventures, set up a number of activities for the children to complete. The first task was a 4 hour hike to find our campsite, through wooded hillsides using only a map and compass for navigation. The three groups managed to do this by themselves, with minimal help from the guides. After the challenging hike, we set up our tents in the middle of a bamboo forest and set about preparing their own meal of pasta bolognese. For desert the students learnt how to make their on campfire bread, and cooked these over hot coals!
The following day we split into 2 groups. One group hiked to a cliff face where our guides had set up various rock climbing routes, and a repelling route. We learned the rules of climbing safety and how to use the equipment properly. The children spent most of the day learning how to climb and repel, and then practicing their techniques. Our guides were very experienced, so they were able to help the children learn rapidly and safely. The other group had a course in first aiding. They learnt about how to splint a fracture in various parts of the body and what to do as a first responder. We role played various situations where the students could put their new skills into practice. The students re-grouped for a fantastic lunch of Sichuan dishes, then swapped activities for the afternoon. During the second evening, the students made their own burritos for dinner and after cleaning up had earned themselves a nice cup of hot chocolate.
On the third day we broke camp, and headed to the ancient town of Xinchang, where our guides had set up a scavenger hunt for the children to complete. This necessitated the children to engage with the local people, ask questions, and learn some facts about the old customs. Throughout all the activities, the students learned how to work together, as well as how to encourage, and support one another. We arrived back to Léman having had a wonderful experience.
