The children in Year 3 have had a fantastic week in science, taking part in exciting food experiments. They have been learning all about different food groups and what they do to help us stay healthy. They wanted to investigate how they could identify some of these groups in the food we eat. The Secondary Science Department worked closely with the Year 3 teachers to set up some exciting experiments, where the children learned to observe, set up fair test and take part in testing the different foods.

Here is a quote from Astrid in 3I: “Today we had science and we figured out if foods had protein, starch or fat in them. With Miss Daisy we saw that when she added chemicals, if it turns purple then it has protein in it ( protein and purple start with p so it is easy to remember). Ellie had milk and it went purple but my one turned blue, I had lemon juice. When we added an orange chemical  (Iodine solution) to potato  it had starch in it because it went blue black. The apple didn't change colour so it didn’t have starch. The things that did were potato, rice, bread and crisps. They all have starch. Also with Miss Yok, we figured out what has fat in it. We had a piece of paper and there were butter and milk so we scrubbed them on the paper. If we could see through it there was fat. My favourite experiment was with Miss Daisy. We wore goggles and lab coats because you don't know if experiments will explode or not. It was a very fun lesson!”
