Forest School at Champittet

From the start of the 2020 school year, Collège Champittet is developing a complementary pedagogical approach known as “open-air school” for preschool and primary school children: a pedagogical vision according to which the child attends classes in nature for a few hours a week, in a new play and learning space.

This approach is based on the pedagogy of Outdoor Education, i.e. education outside the walls. In addition to learning in the classroom, children can explore nature, breathe clean air, become aware of the environment, learn and acquire new knowledge and skills. Children are encouraged to experiment in the wilderness, something that is sorely lacking in our urban populations with their sedentary lifestyles. This change in habit also takes children away from digital screens. Thanks to this concept, children can reconnect with nature and improve their lifestyle and learning: calm, agility, better health, socialization, cooperation, trust, autonomy and creativity.

Learning in nature is not only playful, it also allows a balanced development of the child. From mathematics to creative activities to science, nature is a place for learning. The teacher’s mission is to open a door for children to a new world, the world of nature. Observing, imitating, discovering the life that surrounds them, feeling the earth beneath their feet, the smell of moss ...

This leads to the development of a deep bond with nature and others. In the exceptional setting of its tree-lined campus in Pully, or in the natural surroundings of the school in Nyon, children can exercise, explore, invent, initiate, dream, but also concentrate, observe, marvel, listen and work.
