Recently, at BVIS, we have introduced a new reading scheme called Accelerated Reader.

The system assesses children’s reading levels to ensure they are reading appropriate books and then offers quizzes to check their understanding once they have read the books. Over the course of last term, Ms. Hillier (English), Ms. Murray-Smith (Head of EAL) and Mr Winkley (Year 6) have been working hard to get ‘Accelerated Reader’ up and running in our school. Now all of the students have been tested and assigned reading levels. In excess of 2000 books in the library have been labelled to enable children to select books at an appropriate level and then complete the relevant quizzes. We are now seeing the first students finishing reading their books and taking the reading comprehension quizzes to see how well they have understood it. Once the final training session is completed, the teachers will be setting students individual targets and completing further testing to see how well the students reading has progressed.

So far it has been a great initiative and has already displayed the progress of the students.
