Juilliard dance specialists visit Regents

At Regents we are honoured to be recognised within the global Nord Anglia Education community as a school at the forefront of establishing dance within our school curriculum.

It was such a fantastic experience to see all of the students enjoying dance and gaining so much from this opportunity. I was thrilled to see how confident my son was. He felt supported to jump in to every task, he was so expressive and engaged. He comes home talking about the great experiences he has had in dance, eager to show us what he has learnt. The biggest thing that stood out to me was how empowered the children felt. They could explore and develop their ideas, they were so free to try new things. Having taken part in this dance workshop, I have seen and felt the impact dance is having on the students and it is brilliant! Year 4 Parent
Juilliard visit 2019

On Day 1 of the visit, Juilliard dance specialist Donna Costello led a session with Year 7 students to explore the idea of ‘balance’. Students explored their own sense of balance and challenged themselves to develop their initial responses in to more complex variations.

This was  a fantastic way for students to question how they use balance within their everyday routines, to consider how this idea can be creatively extended within dance and to be inspired by the athleticism and technical virtuosity of professional dancers from the professional ballet ‘The Sleeping Beauty’.

Juilliard Visit 2019

On Day 2 Donna led a session with our Year 4 students to explore the idea of ‘singing feet’ from the brand new Juilliard core work ‘Improvisatory Rhythms in Motion’. Students explored rhythms and movements from Tap dance.  A popular song was used to inspire a range of creative rhythmical responses. Students interpreted how these rhythms could be explored in their feet, hands and how the rest of the body responded.

Juilliard dance visit 2019

As part of the Juilliard visit, our parent community were invited to join in with a dance session led by our own dance specialist Mr Graeme and was supported by Juilliard dance specialists Donna Costello and Hillary Easton. Students and parents from Year 4 explored the theme of ‘connected duets’. Inspired by the work ‘First’ by choreographer John Heginbotham, participants explored how dancers can maintain and utilize physical contact whilst changing levels in a duet.

Students and parents were inspired to be curious and to creatively explore their own unique movement ideas…

It has been an absolute pleasure to see the Regents community in action these past two days. The collaboration is truly blossoming between the performing arts’ faculty and the Juilliard curriculum specialists and resources. Regents marvelous dance teacher Mr Graeme, along with your terrific Juilliard dance curriculum specialist Donna Costello have paved the way at
Regents; the students are dancing, choreographing, and experiencing great works of dance through the Juilliard Core Works. Regents’ students are gaining perceptual and artistic skills, and experiencing real joy for the performing arts. The growth in our work together has been exponential!
