What we’ve been learning:
In Pre-Nursery, maths is part of everything we do! The children have been counting how many children are in school, finding numbers on a cash register or telephone, cutting dough balls in half, filling containers and emptying them, stacking shapes or cars, completing puzzles, and noticing shapes when singing the shape song—“I’m a circle, I go round and round.” We also measure ingredients to make slime or dough, and explore fitting themselves into tiny spaces.

Why it’s important:
These activities provide active learning experiences that help children develop early number sense, spatial awareness, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of measurement and shape. They also build confidence in using maths language naturally in everyday play.

How to support at home:
Count everyday objects together, like toys, snacks, or stairs.
Talk about shapes in the environment—circles, squares, triangles.
Encourage filling and emptying containers while playing with water, sand, or rice.
Let your child help measure ingredients when cooking or baking.
Play with stacking toys, puzzles, or building blocks, and use descriptive language like “taller,” “smaller,” or “half.”
