NAE–MIT Student Trip: Deimante's Visit to Boston

MIT #1

My adventure began on Sunday, 2 November 2025. After we arrived and settled into our hotel rooms, we had a group dinner followed by an introductory session. This was where I met the other students and we received an overview of the exciting week ahead, along with a welcome bag of goodies.

Each morning started with a group breakfast at the hotel before we headed to the MIT campus. On Monday, we collected our official name badges. These also indicated our groups for the week, a colour for our main activity group and an animal for our project team.

I met my animal group and we participated in a puzzle hunt across the campus, which was a fantastic way for us to familiarise ourselves with the university. Later, we attended a presentation by the G-Force team. The day concluded with our first workshop on letterpress printing and a delightful duck boat tour of Boston.

Tuesday was packed with more activities. We visited the MIT Museum for a presentation by a geologist who shared her interesting research. After we took photos at the famous Killian Court, my colour group had a workshop on digital fabrication, where we learned the basics of 3D printing and laser cutting.

In the afternoon, we toured a bio lab to see experiments and how the lab is being used. The evening was very social, we ate dinner at The Cheesecake Factory and visited the mall.

On Wednesday, we attended a presentation from a current MIT student, James Dingley, who discussed his studies and research goals. After that we had Climate Action Summit, where our animal groups debated climate related issues. After lunch, we completed our final workshop.

MIT #2

My group visited a biomaker lab, a hands on space for students studying at MIT. The day ended with a Q&A session with current MIT students.

Thursday was dedicated to our main project. Working in my animal group, we were challenged to design an experiment suitable for a G-Force flight. My team collaborated well, and after a few discussions we developed a Coke and Mentos experiment.

Although our team wasn't chosen as a finalist, the process was a beneficial learning experience. As a fun break, we all went to an escape room in the evening, which was a fun teambuilding experience.

On our final day, Friday, each group presented their project proposals to the G-Force team for judging. After lunch, we spent a enjoyable afternoon exploring Harvard before returning to the hotel for our departure.

Overall, this experience was amazing. I made wonderful new friends, had a fantastic roommate, and found my colour group to be helpful, interesting and incredibly fun. The trip was filled with memorable experiences and learning opportunities, and it was certainly one of the most enjoyable and inspiring weeks of my life.
