The city transforms in July and August in a way that surprises many families, especially those who arrived in winter and were not quite sure what they had signed up for. Parks fill with cyclists, the waterfront comes alive, and the cultural calendar becomes one of the best in the Netherlands.

Rotterdam is not Amsterdam, and that is an advantage for parents. Where Amsterdam leans into its historic canals and tourist trail, Rotterdam offers space, boldness, and a family-friendly energy that is easier to navigate with children in tow.
The city has a compact centre, excellent cycling infrastructure, and a mix of free and low-cost attractions that make summer very accessible. English is spoken widely, which helps visiting families orientate themselves quickly. And because Rotterdam is home to more than 170 nationalities, the city has an ease and openness to it that international families tend to appreciate immediately.
Rotterdam has more green space than its urban skyline suggests. Kralingse Bos is the most popular choice for families. A large woodland park surrounding a lake in the east of the city, it offers cycling paths, picnic spots, open-air swimming in summer, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels miles away from the city centre despite its proximity. On warm weekends it fills with families, and the mood is easy-going and sociable.
Plaswijckpark in the north of the city is another favourite. It combines a small zoo with adventure playgrounds, water play areas, and a traffic garden where younger children can practise cycling. It is one of those places where families can enjoy a full afternoon without anyone asking to leave early.
For something wilder, Speeldernis in the city centre is Rotterdam's urban nature playground. There are no slides or climbing frames, just logs, small streams, mud, and open space. Children love it. Parents find it unexpectedly peaceful.
Rotterdam's museum offer is eclectic, and several venues go out of their way to engage younger visitors during the summer months.
• Diergaarde Blijdorp (Rotterdam Zoo) is one of the oldest and best-loved zoos in the Netherlands. The Oceanium is particularly popular with older children, with its immersive underwater environment that genuinely impresses. Plan a full day.
• The Maritime Museum sits in the city centre with interactive exhibitions and outdoor ships that children can explore. Special summer activities run across July and August. The outdoor Leuvehaven harbour, where several historic vessels are moored, is free to walk around.
• The Marine Museum runs summer missions and activities for children aged 7 and up, including building challenges and patrol activities with map and compass. It is one of the more original museum experiences in the city.
• Villa Zebra is Rotterdam's dedicated children's museum of contemporary art. Interactive exhibits, workshops, and story sessions make it a good wet-weather option for younger children.
Rotterdam is a port city and the water is central to its identity. The Cirkellijn is a hop-on-hop-off water taxi that sails past the city's most iconic sights at weekends and on public holidays. Entrance is free, which makes it one of the best-value ways to see the city from a different angle.
For families who want more time on the water, boat trips on the Maas river offer a relaxed way to spend an afternoon. Older children and teenagers often enjoy the Euromast, the city's iconic tower with panoramic views across Rotterdam and, on a clear day, well beyond. During summer months, abseiling from the tower is available for the more adventurous.
Rotterdam has excellent options for families who want to get outdoors and on the move.
• Fun Forest in Kralingse Bos offers tree-top rope courses across different age groups and difficulty levels. Its well-designed routes help children build confidence and independence step by step.
• Outdoor Valley Rotterdam combines canoeing, archery, zip-lining, and other outdoor activities in a green setting outside the city centre. It suits a range of ages and is good for a full active day.
• Cycling is an inseparable part of life in Rotterdam, and summer is the ideal time to explore the city on two wheels with children. Rental bikes, including cargo bikes (bakfietsen), are available across the city.
Rotterdam's location makes it an ideal base for day trips. Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 19 historic windmills, is a 30-minute drive east and one of the most visited attractions in the Netherlands for good reason. It is best visited early in the morning before the coaches arrive.
The Hague is 30 minutes by train and offers a typical beach experience in Scheveningen, where children can swim, build sandcastles, and eat chips with mayonnaise in the Dutch fashion. It is a straightforward half-day trip that families tend to repeat throughout the summer.
Leiden, Delft, and Gouda are all within 45 minutes and provide a calmer, more historic atmosphere for families who want a change from the city.
If you are new to Rotterdam or expecting to enrol your child in an international school in September, summer is a good time to make connections. Many international school families remain in the city over the holiday period, and informal meet-ups are common. Local sports clubs, summer camps, and activity programmes are all good ways for children to start building friendships before the school year begins.
