High School: Canteen Update

Another Canteen Update, following last week’s meeting between Chef Walter and our Student Voice group.

11018 hs1 (2)

On Monday last week, five representatives from the Student Voice met with the Head Chef of St Andrews, Chef Walter, to discuss the recent changes in the Canteen and possible future improvements.

The students told Chef Walter that they thought that both the quality and variety of food served in the Canteen has improved, and were happy to see both the change to paper straws and the recent arrival of pizzas.

Since last Monday’s discussion, there is now a greater range of snacks in the Snack Shops, including the return or pretzels and new chocolate brownies, with more changes coming soon, including breakfast before school and a Salad Bar.

I asked the members of the Student Journalism ECA what they think about the recent changes in the Canteen:

I am a new student to the High School, and new to St Andrews. Compared to my old  school, I like that the ingredients they use are fresh and the area they cook in is clean. I like the food because we have more choices about what we eat. It is also cheaper compared to my old school and some tastes really good!! Isabell
I am also new to STA this year. I love STA’s High School Canteen because it has various kinds of food. At my  old school, they only had Western and Asian counters. The High School Snack Shops also sell sandwiches, fruit smoothies, bread and juice. For me, I think the High School food quality is better than at my old school. Ayumi
I am now in Year 7 and have moved from the Primary School to the High School. I am happy to say that the High School food is much superior to the food that they serve in the Primary School. The Primary School food, while decent, is much inferior to the High School food, where there is much more choice. The High School food has much more taste than the food at Primary School. Anakin
As a new Year 7 student, the High School food is much better compared to the Primary School. I feel very comfortable with the High School food and have very little to complain about. The new pricing system is very smart and easy to understand the amount that you paid. Kiersten
At the High School Canteen, there are many types of food. If you’re in the mood for just a snack, there is sushi and lots of different sandwiches, like bacon and Caesar salad. If you also want a fuller plate, there are Thai food, curries and noodles - the food is very good! Clara
Since I have been in the High School, I have seen a change in the Canteen. I feel that the food in the Canteen has improved in many ways: There are more options, it is cheaper and I also feel it is cleaner. There is also a difference from just last year - the food is more flavoured and tastier and the new prices are an improvement too. Ella
I have tried every cuisine in the High School Canteen. This includes Western, Vegetarian, Asian, Noodles, Live Cooking and the Snack Shop. In my opinion, the food is very good. The way the Canteen calculates the price of each dish is fair as it is a buffet price, so you can get anything you want for just one price that the Canteen sets for each cuisine. For example, today I had Asian food and it cost me just 65 baht for Hainanese Chicken with rice, Chicken Curry in a small soup bowl and a fried egg. Oan

There have been a huge amount of positive changes in the High School Canteen over the last six weeks, and we are expecting even more soon. The Student Voice will continue to meet regularly with Chef Walter to observe progress and to continue to give feedback, with a plastic-free trial after half-term before their next meeting.
