On Sunday, 3rd November, the Model UN secretariat hosted the sixth St Andrews International School Model United Nations (STAMUN VI). 18 schools from Bangkok and Rayong united to discuss, debate and resolve some of the world’s most pressing issues related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Education and Peace) and 16 (Quality, Justice and Strong Institutions). Led by STA student leaders, delegates converged in the Jo Adamson Theatre to be inspired by the opening keynote address by the UNDP Policy Advisor for Governance, Human Rights and Access to Justice Nicholas Booth.

With over 160 delegates participating it was a chance for our team to accept the challenge and shine. We had 4 out of 16 Chair positions in the hands of senior STAMUN veterans. Two of our delegates were voted "Best Delegates" in their committee. Both Co-Secretary Generals were STA students as were 4 Parliamentarian and 4 Committee Chairs.

The school can feel very proud of the successful completion of the conference. Hats off to Destiny and Manon for leading this student-led event! You, along with STAMUN student team, have shown dynamism, hardworking nature, commitment, passion and leadership qualities. The organization was smooth and efficient throughout and much has been debated in this very productive conference. It was a splendid event, both in terms of intellectual quality and social gratification and we look forward to hosting the 7th STAMUN next year.

STAMUN VI Secretary Generals, Manon and Destiny, reflect about this past month STAMUN VI conference:

During the STAMUN VI students debated topics ranging from the question of education in countries facing long term conflict, the question of reducing violence against women in working environments, to the question of reducing maritime piracy.

Efforts were made to create a more sustainable conference, by handing out bamboo fibre mugs for attendees, having Steps With Theera cater vegan snacks, sending certificates electronically, and providing more vegetarian lunch options, as well as serving chicken as the meat option. Feedback from the students and advisors was extremely positive, especially in regards to the sustainability efforts, and some delegates even called STAMUN VI their most memorable conference.

We hope that STAMUN VII will be just as successful, and wish the best of luck to next year’s secretariat.
