French Language Acquisition
French is taught as an additional (foreign) language at Léman from Grades 6 to 12. This year, we have begun to use the MYP framework, which means students are placed in phases 1 to 6 (1 is for beginners). This programme ensures each student has appropriate linguistic challenges at his or her level.
Students taking French Language Acquisition have access to a plethora online tools. One website they use for every unit is called Quizlet. It gives them 6 possible activities to choose from in order to practise key vocabulary. This way, students can select the activities that best suit their learning style. This website also pronounces the key words for students.
A fun speaking activity I do with my students is “verb go fish”. We have to ask and answer questions using full sentences. The common verbs are already provided, but they have to be creative when they make up their own questions. Such speaking games are very useful to get beginner/intermediate students to interact with each other and practice their spoken French.
The French library is growing. This year, from phases 1 to 6, about 100 books are available. Léman has invested in resources for the French programme. Students should feel free to borrow books throughout the school year.
