Learn about the ResLife Prefect Program Prefectship - ResLife Student Leaders

The ResLife Program is designed to provide students the opportunities to become independent, responsible, and community-minded individuals. To further that development, the program also finds ways for students to demonstrate these very skills and be role models for others to follow. The Prefect Program allows students to step forward into leadership roles within the dorms and work with the Dorm Parents and ResLife Admin Team to maintain a positive and rewarding environment. As leaders in the Residential Life community, Prefects serve an integral role in the success of the program as well as the students they serve.  Prefects have a voice in deciding policies, practices, activities, and events that will not only affect the current students but will hopefully set forth traditions and celebrations for future students to enjoy.

To be selected, students must complete a lengthy application, sit for a formal interview, and be evaluated not only by the ResLife Staff but also boarding peers. Making it through the process and being selected as a Prefect is only the beginning as students then start their formal training in April. In addition to shadowing and reviewing policies and guidelines, Prefects begin a yearlong leadership course. This formal curriculum supports the work the students do in the dorms and prepares them for not only dorm challenges but any of life's many lessons. While many look forward to the Spring as a time of increasing temperatures, I am excited to have the opportunity to recognize those students who possess the leadership skills, academic and social maturity, and self-started motivation to make a difference in the lives of others, to better their community, and to be an active member of Residential Life.  ~ Dean Topodas, Director of Residential Life
