Introduction to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP)

The IB Diploma Program is widely recognized as a gold-standard of high school education around the world and designed as a challenging two-year program of international education with high academic standards. The IBDP is comprehensive and challenging, leading to final examinations before university. Windermere Preparatory School is proud to offer to the IB program to our students and deliver a variety of rigorous IB classes that give all our students an advantage.

What IB Students Study

The curriculum is modeled by a hexagon with six academic areas surrounding three core requirements.

Over the course of the two-year program, students

• study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups.
• complete an extended essay.
• follow a “theory of knowledge” (TOK) course.
• participate in creativity, activity, and service (known as “CAS”).

Normally,

• three of the six subjects are studied at higher level (i.e., courses representing 240 teaching hours).
• the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (i.e., courses representing 150 teaching hours).

Subjects, other than languages, are taught and examined in English.

IB Diploma and Certificate Requirements

The Diploma Program is a two-year, full-time program. Students must choose one subject from each of Languages A and B, Social Sciences, Experimental Sciences, and Mathematics to ensure a breadth of experience. The sixth subject may be an Arts subject, or the student may choose another from the original choices. At least three and not more than four are taken at higher level (HL), and the others at standard level (SL).

In each examination, the student is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). The award of the diploma requires students to meet defined standards and conditions. These include a minimum total of 24 points and the satisfactory completion of three compulsory core components: theory of knowledge (TOK); the extended essay; and creativity, activity, and service (CAS).
