Staff Profile: Stephanie Currie

Stephanie Currie

Director of Modern Foreign Languages

I attended Exeter University and graduated with a Combined Honours BA Degree in Spanish and Italian. As part of my degree I also took 3 years of Catalan, in which I achieved a Generalitat de Catalunya Government proficiency certificate. During my degree I spent a year living in Northern Italy where I studied at the Università degli Studi di Trento. Throughout this time I also spent an extensive amount of time on and off between England and Connecticut working for Connecticut State Grange, a Non-Governmental Organisation, as a Director of Children’s Programmes. I went on to work for the University of Exeter as an Education Officer and Events Co-ordinator before moving to Spain to teach English and Italian as a Lecturer at the Universidad de Cordoba.

I decided to train as a teacher upon my return from Spain. I achieved my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at The University of Bristol and started my career as a teacher. I taught at a Boys’ Grammar School in Gloucester, a mixed Comprehensive in Somerset and a top school in Winchester before my move. I am now the Head of World Languages at school. I work with a fabulous, enthusiastic department who are all as passionate about languages as I am. I am also fortunate enough to have a wonderful tutor group. As part of my contributions to extra-curricular activities here at BSH I run clubs for languages, crafts and athletics as well as co-ordinating the Duke of Edinburgh Award. I had spent a long time wanting to return to the States after such wonderful experiences in New England and was thrilled to have the opportunity to come and work in Houston.

Outside of school I love to travel, surf, read, hike, cycle, swim, camp and do arts and crafts. I’m always looking for new travel destinations and experiences. As part of my move to Houston I have taken up cycling of a more committed nature and have completed the MS150 each year since moving to Houston. I have completed the Houston half marathon as well as triathlons of Sprint and Olympic Distance – I’m now aiming for a Half Ironman in the next 2 years! In my free time I volunteer with local organisations to support the Houston community.

What the students say about me

"She is one of the most patient teachers in school."

"She takes the time to explain things to you differently if you don’t understand."

"Miss Currie makes lessons really fun and she speaks so many languages… Wow!"

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

The students are amazing - I absolutely adore them!
