Amy Kirman

Teacher of Art and Design Technology and Year 10 Form Tutor

Following on from an A* at GCSE level and full marks at double Art A level it only seemed natural to continue my own education with an Art foundation course at the University of Central Lancashire. It was here where I also completed my 3 year degree course in Fine Art where I was awarded a BA Honours degree. I learnt a great deal about painting, printmaking and drawing as well as developing my interpersonal skills such as communication and presentation. I gained some fantastic experiences by working with local artists and travelling the country to visit some of the best art exhibitions, ensuring I kept up to date with the ever changing art scene.

Soon after completing my degree I began my PGCE in Art Education at Birmingham City University. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing a stimulating and challenging learning environment. During this time I worked at an all boys Grammar school and a Community Sports college which gave me a broad range of new skills and insights in to the various teaching and learning methods.

My teaching career really started in Suffolk where I worked for an outstanding school for 4 years. I really enjoyed my role as a form tutor, as well as being the second in department for Art and a teacher of Graphic Design. I had travelled a fair deal previously and spent a few months working in upstate New York working as a Visual Arts teacher. The decision to move to Houston was based on my desire to experience a new style of living with new cultures and more diversity. I love to travel and had always wanted to live and work overseas so the British International School of Houston seemed like the perfect choice and I am looking forward to exploring as much of America as possible.

All of these experiences have left me with a thirst for knowledge and a zest for life. I am passionate about teaching and I always aim to engage with as much Art as possible. I believe that through Art and DT, I can teach pupils more than the practical skills needed to follow a career path. They are able to gain valuable life skills such as confidence, independence, risk taking, the ability to analyse and voice their opinions, as well as helping them to expand their creativity.

I would describe myself as a family orientated, creative, adventurous and energetic person. I love all things outdoors, in particular camping and hiking. I am very passionate about art and spend a great deal of my free time visiting galleries, both local and all over the world. My favourites being the Venice Gugenheim and MoMA in New York. My other interests include reading, watching movies, keeping fit and music.

What the students say about me...

“Miss Kirman inspires us every lesson to try our best.”

“I think that Miss Kirman is a very good teacher and she is very nice to us.”

“What I like about Miss Kirman is that she is a very good artist and she is very nice and kind.”

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

The British International School of Houston is different to my previous schools due to the diverse range of international students. Having not worked in an international school before, I was amazed to see just how well these young people all gel together. I quickly learnt that there was no divide, only young people engaging with and genuinely enjoying their education. I have been so impressed with the levels of maturity, respect and compassion these children show each other daily.
