Staff Profile: Steven Lithgo

Steven Lithgo

Teacher of Mathematics and Head of Fire House

I spent 12 years teaching at Secondary schools in the North East of England before moving to Qatar to teach in 2012. I have held various positions within the Mathematics department and was Head of A Level Mathematics before moving to Qatar.

In Qatar I was a Senior Leader, responsible for the Secondary school curriculum. My role included mapping the whole school curriculum, monitoring student progress and organising the GSCE options and timetable.

I have an Honours Degree in Mathematics, Accounting and Financial Management from Sheffield University and a PGCE from Newcastle University. I specialize in teaching A Level and IB Mathematics but have taught all ability groups from Year 7 to 13 for the past 15 years.

I was born and raised in the North East of England and I spent the majority of my life there before moving to Qatar in 2012. I am here in Houston with my wife and daughter, who is in Year 3. Our two cats have made the journey from Qatar with us, and we have adopted a kitten shortly after arriving here. I am a keen football fan supporting Sunderland AFC (although many argue that this is an oxymoron!!). I enjoy playing football, badminton, going swimming and I have run the Great North Run (a 13 mile road race). I love the sports here in Houston and am enjoying watching the Dynamo, Texans and Astros.

What the students say about me...

“Mr Lithgo is kind and happy, you can tell he really loves his job”

“He is really good at helping when you don’t understand”

“He makes learning easier by introducing us to simple and organised ways to figure out maths problems”

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

The British International School of Houston really makes me feel part of a community. The staff, students and parents are all incredibly supportive and have the student’s best interests at the centre of what they do. I have been amazed at the brilliant attitude of the students towards their studies and as a parent I am delighted that my daughter attends the school. I know she is getting a truly fantastic education and experience.
