I have a BA(Hons) degree in English Language and Literature, a BSc(Hons) degree in Sport and Exercise Science and a PGCSE in PE and English. After completing A-levels, I embarked on a series of alternating gap years and higher education that saw me working at St Peter’s School, Cambridge, New Zealand; teaching English in Madrid, Spain; studying at the Open University in Milton Keynes; teaching English at the ABC Language School in Eastbourne, East Sussex and completing my teaching qualification at the University of Exeter.
After teaching at Edgehill College, Devon, I was appointed head of PE at the International School of Madrid and, over the course of seven years there, moved to Head of English, before coming to the British International School of Houston in 2007.
I have followed in my father’s steps, since he too taught English and PE – in his case at Rugby School then Repton School. I enjoy all sports, playing the guitar, drama and I’m a typical jack-, not master-, of-all-trades. That is, except for novel-writing, which remains a ‘trade’ that I would actually like to master. I am married to Anna and have a daughter, Olivia.
What the students say about me
"He’s funny but keeps us all on task and learning."
"Mr Bennett has a way of making some of the tougher tasks in English IB – analysing poetry for example – somewhat less painful and, dare I say, occasionally fun."
"Under Mr Bennett, the junior varsity team remained undefeated! He’s far too old to play now, although he thinks he’s still young and athletic."
"He wails on the guitar."
This school is different to all others I have worked at because…
The friendly, generous and hard-working nature of the students.
The absolute dedication to the students’ learning from staff and parents.
Great school trips!
