Ms Heather Yap

Heather Yap

Swimming Coach

Ms Heather Yap began participating in teaching swim programs at the age of 16. She begin to pursue teaching in the school community. She was actively involved in International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching and learning which has helped her to realise her calling in swimming and made the decision to be fully committed to full time coaching and teaching at BSKL.

I began participating in teaching swim programs at the age of 16. I worked in a learn to swim cooperate in 2014, mostly with management level, hands on learn to swim lessons and coaching swimming in pre-competitive level. By 2016, I wanted to expand my learning and teaching and begin to pursue my teaching in the school community. Since 2016 to 2018, I have been actively involved in International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching and learning. During this period of time, I am still actively involved in the private learn-to-swim program due to my passion in swimming. However, upon being involved in IB teaching and learning, it has helped me to realise my calling in swimming and finally made my decision to be fully committed doing a full time coaching and teaching in BSKL Aquatic Department.

One of my hobbies is swimming as it plays a big part in my life. I started swimming training at the age of 11 and joined various clubs and State swimming competitions. Swimming has encouraged me to face challenges with an optimistic mind and full heart. It taught me that nothing shall come easy, in order to improve my race time, it requires great commitment in training. Basically shaped who I have become now. Due to my interest in swimming, it has provided me the gateway to experience another aquatic sport- Water Polo, in which it has also become my second hobby. I have 10 year of water polo experience as a player, since 2011. I played in various State tournaments and a few international championships, I.e Southeast Asian Games 2015 in Singapore. Even till today, I am still actively taking part in water polo competition and I am also a qualified FINA Water Polo Referee. Water polo is not just a sport or a hobby to me, it has provided me the opportunity to work on my social skills, learning to be a team player, developing my confidence and best of all allowing me to develop a strong friendship with my teammate. Lastly, I am also a qualified Advanced Open Water Diver. I will often go on a diving trip to discover new aquatic species that I have not seen before. I enjoy the moment when I am up close with all these wild sea creatures as it gives me a thought to appreciate great things. The most memorable dive I had was being able to see cuttlefish hunting for food during a night dive, a large eel hiding in its nest between rocks, a squid changing colours under the reflection of the flashlights. Diving is just an adventurous hobby that I would wish to continue on until I think I have seen enough or too old to continue.

Student happiness to me is being able to see the smile on the students’ faces as they learn in BSKL. My role being part of the BSKL Community is not simply just to conduct lessons but also to ensure the students are enjoying their lessons while feeling supported, valued and safe. My role as a teacher, I play a role to create a safe environment for the students to enjoy and being able to value their learning.
