The middle school kicked off another year of learning on Wednesday, 28 August with a spirited and interactive Entry Point activity. The purpose of the Entry Point is to introduce a new IMYC unit of learning and to invite students to begin thinking about the BIG IDEA for their next unit.

Grade 6

Unit:  Creativity

Big Idea:  Innovative ideas happen when existing or new concepts are brought together or expressed in a new way

Entry Point:  We combined Science with Art and learned how to create our

own coloured paints from scratch! And then we painted with our hand-made paints! A huge thank you to Mr Parks for his Chemistry expertise as he taught us about mass, volume and how to safely combine different chemicals to create liquid paint. We are so grateful for our time in the lab with you!

Student Highlights:

Vera “It was cool to see how the chemicals changed colour. It was awesome sauce!”

Vidhi “It was nice to make something with our hands.”

Noa “It was interesting to learn how they used to make paint in olden times.”

Grade 7

Unit:  Curiosity

Big Idea:  The desire to know more drives exploration and aspiration

Entry Point:  Grade 7 went on a Scavenger Hunt around the school, looking for objects and clues to lead them to a final riddle to solve! The desire to know the next clue and final riddle drove the students’ exploration and aspiration.

Ms. Nunes: "That was amazing, the students all looked excited and engaged!"

Grade 8

Unit:  Community

Big Idea:  A shared sense of belonging occurs when people are able to negotiate and appreciate their complex and often messy differences

Entry Point:  The G8 students divided into teams and worked together on a ‘community photo scavenger hunt’.  Within their small communities, they explored the local community. They worked together to find and take as many pictures as they could.  When the time for the scavenger hunt was up, the students came back to share and reflect on their experience.
