Upper School at NAISNY comprises of students aged 9-14 years old and is equivalent to Grades 4-8 in the American school system.
In Upper School, students are at a unique stage; discovering independence but needing support to grow academically and personally. By using both the National Curriculum of England, the International Primary and Middle Years curriculums we offer a great solution, strengthened further by collaborations with MIT, Julliard and UNICEF.
From Year 5 (grade 4), every subject is taught by a dedicated specialist teacher, a unique feature of our school. Our engaging curriculum challenges students to make connections across subjects and deepen their personal understanding of how our themes relate to the wider world.
The English National Curriculum forms the basis for the content of our challenging program of study. It builds on prior learning and encourages students to explore, in greater depth, the concepts, processes and skills of specific subjects. The depth of study in each area ensures that during the five years the students spend in Upper School, they are prepared for their chosen pathway into high school in New York, the United States or internationally.
Through the English National Curriculum, students will study:
Through our collaboration with The Julliard School, performing arts are taught using the Julliard Creative Curriculum for:
Skills in, history, geography, social studies and citizenship are taught through our international curriculums:
The IPC and IMYC provide our students with a unique opportunity to make learning connections between the various subjects. They offer a thematic approach to education, which brings learning to life for students. The program offers a lively, motivational and cross curricula approach, helping students to develop greater confidence in their learning and its relevance to their world.
At NAISNY, we believe emotional intelligence and strong relationships are a vital part of developing our students to achieve and thrive. Through Upper School, students are divided into forms, mixing year groups to provide opportunities for students to foster relationships with a wider range of peers as well as opportunities for mentoring and leadership skills. Form time, at the beginning and end of the day, includes a wide range of activities to develop these skills and develop a deeper understanding of the world.
In Year 8 and 9 students also have the opportunity to implement their vision for the school and develop their leadership skills by joining the student leadership team and becoming the voice of the student body.
Transition to High School
This is an important time for influencing the crucial decisions our students will make about their future and we work closely with every student and their families to provide the personal guidance and support needed to ensure a successful future after leaving NAISNY. When they graduate from Upper School, our Year 9 students are self-confident, socially conscious, and ready to succeed at the High school. Every year, students from NAISNY go on to the top high schools in NYC and worldwide.
