Dover Court Year 5 - The Great, The Bold and The Brave! The first half term of Year 5 saw us travelling back in time to one of the world's ancient civilisations, the Ancient Greeks!

The first half term of Year 5 saw us travelling back in time to one of the world's ancient civilisations, the Ancient Greeks!

Here, we discovered democracy, Spartan war strategies and heroic events that saw the Greeks emerge victorious from battles with the Persians. We then continued forward to the Romans, looking at how they built upon Greece's beliefs and structures to dominate the ancient world, using plumbing and heating to bring luxurious baths and homes to the European continent. Our journey then took us through Europe to Britain, where we found ourselves in the middle of a constant power struggle between the Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. However, we did find the time to explore the mysterious site of Sutton Hoo and consider what it may have once been.

Towards the end of our topic, we watched the downfall of the Anglo-Saxons, as the Normans brutally slaughtered Harold at the Battle of Hastings, creating our own Bayeux Tapestry artwork and ancient civilisation artefacts. All of this made our dress-up day possible, where Year 5 came to school as their favourite ancient civilian and what a fantastic experience this was! Needless to say, we are anticipating just as much excitement and engagement in our next topic!
