Global Social Leaders 'Global Goals Competition' Despite the challenge of COVID-19, our Precious Plastics group made it through to the semi-final of the Global Social Leaders 'Global Goals Competition', from 249 entries.

Despite the challenge of COVID-19, our Precious Plastics group made it through to the semi-final of the Global Social Leaders 'Global Goals Competition', from 249 entries.  Read more about their journey below.

For the last two years BIS has linked with the Global Social Leaders (GSL) organisation and taken part in their Global Goals Competition. GSL began in 2011, created by Future Foundations and Wellington Leadership Institute, and has a “vision for a society where all organisations are led by socially conscious people” (Global Social Leaders, n.d.). They lead on a number of projects designed to inspire young people and give them both a voice and a platform to act on issues they care about. These issues may be Global or Local. Young people are invited to take part in programmes and conferences designed to improve their skills and raise their awareness of issues, encouraging them to take action.

 

The Global Goals Competition aims to develop global citizenship and enable students to turn their ideas into reality. Young people are tasked with designing and implementing a project that helps to achieve the Global Goals, giving them the skills needed to become socially conscious leaders. Last year, 3 of our school projects entered the global competition: Greenr Minds, Uniform Upcycling, and Precious Plastics. This involved putting together an action plan and implementing this within our community.
 

Despite the challenge of COVID-19 which reduced the impact our teams were able to have, our Precious Plastics group made it through to the semi-final, from 249 entries. The GSL team had the following feedback for the group:

“You've done a really fantastic thing by identifying a clear inspiration and seeking to replicate it. So often we want our ideas to be original and unique which means we sacrifice on efficiency - this plastic project is really exciting and I'm already looking forward to hearing what you go onto make with your new, hard-earned machines!

Well done on identifying that your local cafes etc. sell plastic and doing what you can to mitigate this. 

It's clear that you've had some learning curves which you've come out as a stronger team together and you've also done a good job collaborating with others and negotiating. Keep up the resilience!” 

In good news, we will be shortly receiving the plastic recycling machine that the students have worked so hard to bring onto campus, and in the next phase of the project the team will start to recycling plastic on site.
 

We are incredibly proud of all of the students involved, especially as they worked across Year Groups on this projects. Johnny, Henry and Matilda (Year 8), Ollie (Year 10), and Que Khanh, Thuy Anh, Anadori, and Eugene (Year 13)…well done to you all!
