Salla teaching

Salla first viewed the DAB Juilliard dance programme where the lesson was called "Say It Without Words". The students were focusing on “How the dancers in The Sleeping Beauty use pantomime to help tell a story in a stylized way”. Students explored how to non-verbally communicate ideas and feelings.

At our LIM campus our Dance teachers Chris and Jo taught a Juilliard lesson  to Year 7 and 8 Dance students "Formations in Motion". Students discovered how dancers enter, exit, and travel through space while maintaining a “fixed” group formation.

Students map and embody moving formations to explore strategies for maintaining a “fixed” group formation while traveling through space.

Salla then taught a lesson to year 6 dance on Physical Tagging. Themes included exploring how the dancers bring their individuality and uniqueness to the freestyled sections of Continuum.

Students looked for connections between the ways writers and hip-hop dancers express their individuality by creating movements inspired by different styles of tagging. Salla was impressed with how much progress had been made in only a few weeks and gave advice on how to shape the Juilliard Dance programme over the coming year.

The programme at DAB and LIM will be focusing on many styles of Dance this year including Flamenco which will be combined with a live band performance from our Music department.
