While funds at 80 percent of U.S. school districts have been cut since 2000, including some private intuitions who are reallocating resources to focus on STEM as their primary curriculum, BISW and Nord Anglia Education realizes there’s a balance for nurturing students’ critical, creative, and practical and social skills. The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Program has brought Juilliard's philosophies of teaching dance, drama, and music to Nord Anglia classrooms around the world. The program seeks to inspire and equip students with the creativity, curiosity, and cultural literacy to engage with the performing arts throughout their lives. BISW students have all the access they need to music learning, because we value music’s impact and we believe that music education will help students learn more creatively and confidently across all of their subjects.
And more than just a belief in the value of a comprehensive arts education, our approach is supported by a wide range of modern education research. For example, a study published in 2007 at the University of Kansas observed that students in elementary and middle schools with high-quality music programs performed better on standardized tests, relative to similar schools without music programs.
It was pleasure to watch Flutronix inspire student creativity across a wide range of ages. No matter what grades the students are, they were all deeply engaged with the music. The students in Nursery wiggled to the rhythm; the Year 4 students were absolutely transfixed by the complex notes and harmonies, and they asked so many wonderful questions; at student workshops, the sounds of violin, guitar, harp, keyboard, brass, and drums miraculously blended together without rehearsal. responding to a series of creative prompts provided by Flutronix. The music seemed to unleash the students’ creativity, curiosity and collaboration!
I’m proud to be a part of the BISW community, where every student has the access they need to tremendous performing arts resources. They have phenomenal music instructors, professional musicians with abundant teaching experience; a splendid music room with all kinds of instruments; and unique access to the excellent performers from The Juilliard School.
British International School of Washington is committed to our one-of-a-kind music and performing arts curriculum, as we believe our students will gain life-long benefits, leading to a more enriched life.
