FAQs
- What is the difference between the IB Diploma and the Czech maturita?
- The IB Diploma is an international two-year programme in which students study six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, alongside an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. It is scored out of 45.
The Czech maturita is the national school-leaving exam, combining common state exams with school-set profile exams.- Can my child study at a Czech university with an IB Diploma?
- Yes. PBIS graduates regularly go on to Czech universities such as Charles University, the Czech Technical University in Prague and VŠE. Admission requirements, including any recognition process and entrance exams, vary by university and course, so it is worth checking each university's rules early.
- Do universities in the UK and US accept the IB Diploma?
- Yes. The IB Diploma is accepted by universities in more than 100 countries, including every leading university in the UK and the US. UK offers are usually expressed as a total points score plus specific Higher Level grades. US universities consider IB results alongside essays, extracurricular activities and, at some institutions, standardised test scores.
- What is the IB Bilingual Diploma?
- The IB Bilingual Diploma is awarded to students who complete part of their IB studies in two languages, for example by studying literature in both English and Czech. It shows universities that a student can work at an advanced academic level in two languages.
- What do top universities look for besides grades?
- Top universities look for genuine interest in the chosen subject, shown through wider reading, research, competitions or relevant experience. UK universities assess a personal statement and reference, and some set admissions tests and interviews. US universities weigh essays, extracurricular activities and leadership.
