The Global Classroom

This year the Global Classroom in-school Big Challenge is known as Make It Right which is a project linked (with Oxfam) to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. BISB students have decided to focus their project on the Right to Play and the Right to Healthcare, and to try to improve the experience of children in hospital here in Bratislava. Details on this challenge can be found in our previous newsletter and on the Global Classroom video http://vimeo.com/108993317

We have committed to collecting 20,000 Euros to provide a therapeutic play area, improved equipment for the physiotherapy gym, outdoor balcony play area, school area and refurbished kitchen for the Orthopaedic Ward at the Kramare Children’s Hospital. We are delighted to be partnering with Kramare and thank the Hospital Director for allowing us this opportunity to give something back to our local community. More than 700 children a year are admitted to the Orthopaedic Ward, with over 600 surgeries carried out! Provision of a modern, well equipped therapeutic play area has the potential to positively enhance the lives of hundreds of children a year. I am sure you will agree with us that this is a very worthwhile project!

Since launching our Challenge we have had a wonderful response to our fundraising efforts and have now collected almost 3,000 Euros, including more than 200 Euros raised this week at the Years 3 & 4 productions. Thank you once again for your generosity! If you would like more information on our project and how you can help, please email MakeItRight@bisb.sk

As part of our commitment to Kramare we were delighted to link with the US Marines at the American Embassy. Every year the Marines hold a toy collection for their charity Toys 4 Tots. This year we joined their Toys 4 Tots collection and donated hundreds of toys to Kramare – so many in fact that the Orthopaedic Ward was able to share the donations with children on other Wards and Clinics in the hospital! Children from the Primary School Global Classroom Club and Secondary students who had been involved in fundraising activities visited Kramare on the morning of the last day of term with representatives of the Marines to donate the toys. Our children had a wonderful time meeting with patients and their families and giving out gifts. There were many comments from them about how nice it felt to give and how happy it made them to see the excitement of children at receiving an unexpected gift. We would like to thank Mrs Scharpf for establishing the link with the Marines and Toys 4 Tots, and to all our students and families who donated toys to the collection.

The Global Classroom continues to inspire students not just to think locally, but internationally too. Next month a group of 11 students from Years 9 & 12 will travel to Tanzania to continue the pioneering work begun last year. The camp at Arusha has the opportunity to host students from all 31 Nord Anglia schools, and we know that our students will enjoy the opportunity to continue working to improve the local primary school and orphanage with which we are partnered. All fundraising carried out by this group of students will go to directly benefit the primary school and orphanage and, again, we thank you for supporting our students as they develop into internationally minded, caring and active global citizens.

You will be able to follow along with #TeamTanzania on their 7 day trip via our Twitter account @BISB_Global

Students are reminded that the Debate League Round 2 begins on 19 January. We did very well in Round 1, with numerous teams from both Primary and Secondary winning their debates and we hope for similar success in Round 2. Lower Secondary are debating the motion ‘Space Tourism is worth the risk’, whilst Upper Secondary will be debating ‘Volunteer tourists do more harm than good.’ Fixture lists are on the appropriate area of the Global Classroom.

The 2015 Creative Writing Competition (with parallel Illustration competition) was launched at the beginning of January. We look forward to sharing our entries with you as students write on ‘somewhere unforgettable’. Winners will be published by Nord Anglia. Details, including a video and presentation, are available on the Global Classroom.

The annual Open Mic competition for our singers and musicians has also opened. Students can upload a recording of their performance to the Global Classroom. Winning entries will be available in a compilation album later this year. You can listen to last year’s winners on the Global Classroom. Closing date is April 17th.

We will shortly be running a parent information session on the Global Classroom and the opportunities it offers to your child. Please contact lconway@bisb.sk (Secondary) or ujardine@bisb.sk (Primary) for more information.
