Celebrating the achievements of our pupils outside of the classroom!

This week: Sophie McK. – Golf

Who are you and what class are you in?

My name is Sophie and I am in Year 6 Rowan.

What is your hidden talent?

The first time I was on a driving range was 3, but I started finding it interesting two years ago at the start of Covid because you could play outdoors.

Why do you enjoy it so much?

My whole family plays, and if we are in England, I can play altogether with my family and have family competitions. Golf is a social sport and it is outside in nature. There is also always something to improve.

Why is it important to work hard towards your goal?

It is important so you know that you have achieved something. My trainer asks what handicap I want you to achieve and you work hard on it. My current handicap is 19.6. My goal for the year is 15.

Have you taken part in any competitions or ways to show your talent outside of school?

My last competition was US kids Golf Championship Poland, which I won so I got an invitation to the US Kids Golf Championship Europe later in this year.

What would you say to someone who might want to try something similar?

I would say it doesn’t matter your age, but if you want to try something new and different from other sports that most children play then pick Golf.

How has this hidden talent helped you?

It has helped me loosen up and become more confident in myself. I was very shy but some of the first competitions I played in were adult competitions but the adults were talking to me and that helped me build up my confidence.
