What Is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of United Nations proceedings, including discussions, debates, and negotiations. It offers students an excellent opportunity to explore the fields of diplomacy, international relations, and the work of the United Nations.

During MUN conferences, students collaborate to propose solutions to pressing global issues and current international conflicts. Through this process, participants develop valuable skills such as public speaking, debating, teamwork, critical thinking, research, and leadership.

A Brief History of MUN

MUN originated in the mid-20th century, evolving from simulations of the League of Nations. Following the establishment of the United Nations in 1945, MUN became a platform for students to role-play as diplomats, debating real-world issues and simulating UN committee work.

The first recognised MUN conference took place at Harvard University in 1951. Since then, MUN has expanded globally, helping students develop essential future-ready skills while deepening their understanding of international relations and diplomacy.

What to Expect at TBSMUN 2026

At a Model United Nations conference, delegates represent countries within UN-style committees and debate global issues such as climate change, human rights, and international security. Participants must:

  • advocate for their assigned country’s policies,
  • negotiate with other delegates,
  • and draft resolutions addressing key challenges.

TBSMUN 2026 will host over 250 participants, each representing a country-or in some cases, an organisation- across 14 committees. These range from the Security Council (SC) to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

As a delegate, you will debate in the committee of your choice, represent a country of your choice, and explore a topic selected by our experienced chair board. This conference will be a valuable, unique, and enriching part of your learning experience.
