Year 8 - Free Rice Project to help solve World Hunger

  • Free Rice
  • Free Rice

Over the past two months, students from Year 8 have been taking part in morning activities through www.freerice.com ; the purpose of the website is to help solve world hunger through student-based learning. For every question successfully answered, the website (who is endorsed by the UN) give away ten grains of rice to people across the world who are malnourished, victims of famine or are involved in the current conflicts, including Syria.

To date, students from Year 8 have successfully answered so many questions correctly that they have contributed to the feeding of over 360 families.

It is our aim, as a school, to ensure that the core values that we hold dear are embedded within our Teaching and Learning. The students of Year 8 are very proud of their accomplishments and it has opened up the problems facing other people within the world.

Speaking of the project, Stephenie Chen (8C) had the following comments:

It is important to us, as a student base, that we do not take our privilege for granted. Attending a school like BSB could make us expectant of society. It is, however, nice to give back to those who are less fortunate than us; or simply provide opportunities for those affected by natural disasters, humanitarian crisis or war.  Sometimes I play the game at home with friends. It helps develop my knowledge, understanding and helps me to empathise with those in need.”

Update from: Mr. David Cairns, Teacher of English/Head of Year 8
