Students collaborate to tackle real-life water problems

Our students have recently taken part in the Global Classroom’s Water Challenge - a competition which encouraged them to work like scientists and engineers to solve global water issues.

Water access and management is a key global issue – whether the problem is that there is too much, not enough or access to clean water. The United Nations named 2013 the Year of International Water Cooperation, making it an ideal topic for our students around the world to tackle in this year's Global Classroom in-school activity.

The Global Classroom’s annual in-school activity gives students the opportunity to experience hands-on authentic learning. Students are able to collaborate, innovate and lead a large-scale project that will have a sustainable and wide-reaching impact. 

Our students researched a wide range of global water problems, before choosing one issue to explore further. Working collboratively, they designed, built and tested a solution to the chosen problem, which ranged from ways to produce suitable drinking water to flood-proof housing.

The charity Practical Action gave our students the context for the challenge by sharing some of the work they’ve done with local communities around the world to find practical solutions to the poverty they face. Scientists from Imperial College, London shared their ideas about how to take part in the challenge successfully.

The Water Challenge encouraged our students to improve their skills, knowledge and attitudes to learning using our High Performance Learning approach. Students developed their knowledge and understanding of both water-related problems facing communities around the world and scientific processes used to find solutions to them. They developed their inquiry skills, used their imagination and creativity and demonstrated perseverance to find a solution that worked.

The Water Challenge entries are now being judged and winners will be announced in early March.
