📢 Join us for our Open Day (12th November) | Application Fee Waiver (*)
The British International School Hanoi Science Department has expanded this year with the arrival of three new members of staff - Nicola Hemming (Biology) joined us from Beijing, China; Hannah Bradford (Biology) from Mexico City and Tim Lovatt (Physics) from London, UK. I am pleased to say that so far this year we have continued our strong tradition of academic excellence in lessons whilst also maintaining our high profile within the school.
Three years ago the Secondary Science Department came up with the idea of running a week of activities to coincide with British Science Week. The idea would be that it would cumulate on the Friday with an assembly where the teachers in the Department would give a practical demonstration of classic experiments designed to excite and enthuse all students from Year 1 to Year 13. Well I can honestly say that I think our Secondary Science Week has been our best and most extensive ever! We have had Ms Hemming take her Year 7s into the primary school to demonstrate experiments; Mr Lovatt doing a primary physics show; project work going on during KS3 lessons making spaghetti towers, rockets and timer devices; special Life Skills lessons for Years 7-11 on careers in Science, and a Year 10 House big STEAM quiz. The week ended brilliantly with our Science assembly on Friday March 17th where the science team performed some chemical magic; resurrected a dead frog ; created a foam fountain, showed some cold light in the dark; fired a potato cannon; showed what happens during respiration and finally they let off a ping pong bomb. How can we beat this next year I wonder?
Other activities that have also been run this year by the Department include the Y10 House Science practical competition held in December, Secondary Fit and Healthy week in January and Year 13 trips to Hanoi University of Technology and Hanoi Medical University last month as part of the Cambridge International A level Chemistry and Biology courses.
