Some of our youngest children have gained a wonderful flavour of International Week.
International Week is an action packed week for all students, but for many students in F2 it is the first time that they can vocalise where their home country is, where Granny and Grandpa live, and to recognise their country’s flag.
As we visited different classes representing different countries, our children had the opportunity to embrace the spirit of internationalism. They have also begun to meet some Early Years objectives including ‘describing special times for their family, adapting behaviour to different events and changes in routine, knowing things that make them unique, talking about similarities and differences’.
For some children it is very hard to get out of their routines. Teachers are keen to support children as they take part in these new experiences; to praise them for their courage in trying something new and to encourage their independence and confidence. Our Children have shown wonderful resilience this week when taking part in new experiences.
They visited Greece in Y2, taking part in Greek themed activities such as getting the Minotaur through the maze using Lego and tasting tzatsiki and feta cheese. Another F2 class visited South Korea having a go at Karaoke and tasting Korean snacks. All the EYFS areas have been visited so we have enjoyed mixing coffee and spaghetti in Italy in the back play, playing Sumo as we visited Japan in the soft play and exploring the animals of New Zealand in the splash pool.
A highlight for F2, of course, was the Global Café. Some of our EYFS curriculum areas include ‘willing to try new textures and food’, and ‘adapting behaviour to changes in routine’, so tasting new food and meeting lots of new adults really helped us to meet these objectives… well of course as eating some delicious foods and appreciating different countries that they are from.
F2 were responsible for decorating the front playground so we hope everyone has enjoyed telling the time with the clock tower from Ben Thanh market and looking at the beautiful Tet flower branches and Hoi An lanterns. F2 children have taken part in many Vietnamese themed activities this week including a wonderful art project to screen print Vietnamese tiles. Keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks as we put these together as a big, fantastic F2 display.
