The Importance of Physical Health - Weekly Wellbeing

“A clear distinction is often made between ‘mind’ and ‘body’. But when considering mental health and physical health, the two should not be thought of as separate.’ - mentalhealth.org.uk

For this week’s #WeeklyWellbeing topic, our Student Wellbeing Committee have focused on the importance of Physical Health. In this blog, we share the key benefits of encouraging your children to participate in exercise and how this can have a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

For this week’s #WeeklyWellbeing topic, our Student Wellbeing Committee have focused on the importance of Physical Health. In this blog, we share the key benefits of encouraging your children to participate in exercise and how this can have a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Improves our mood - Physical and mental wellbeing go hand in hand. Exercise is a great way to keep our students physically healthy as well as improving their state of mind. Research has proven that undertaking exercise releases endorphins to the brain, which in turn makes us feel good and improves our mood.

Boosts energy levels - Having high energy levels is extremely important at school, particularly during certain times of the year such as exam season. It’s been scientifically proven that doing physical exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to the entire body helping it to work more efficiently.

Improves the quality of our sleep - As we emphasised last week, establishing a good sleep pattern is essential for improving mental wellbeing. If you’re active during the day, you tend to fall asleep easier and stay asleep for longer.

Helps to combat health issues - Being physically healthy means our bodies are better equipped to fight an illness which of course means less days off school!

Opportunity to socialise - joining a sports team is a great way for students to get more involved with the school community and meet new friends.

Unsure of whether exercise can really make you happy? Watch this video:

Just 10 minutes of exercise a day can increase alertness, positivity and energy levels as you can see from our spontaneous dance class above. Therefore we encourage you, as parents to emphasise the importance of good physical health to your children and persuade them to do something physical every single day, even if it is just for 10 minutes.

At BIS HCMC a wide range of sports are catered for through the standard curriculum and as part of our extensive extra-curricular programme. There is definitely something for everyone in the PE and Sports department. So if your child is interested in joining an extra-curricular club please take a look at the activities we have available.
