Last year you may remember that our student netball team, made up of Year 5 and Year 6 students, competed in a Netball tournament between three other international schools and won. This term they faced an even bigger challenge...

Last Friday, December 8th, staff and students battled it out to win the first ever BIS HCMC Staff Vs Students netball match. The side-lines were crammed full of eager students cheering on their fellow year 5 and 6 student’s netball team. It was a fast, rough and energetic game with lots of interesting “interpretations” of some rules by the teachers!

The staff tore away to a significant lead in the first half. However, the student’s team turned things around in the second half after some poor passes made by the teachers, and Mr John Handscombe’s unfortunate confusion between Basketball and Netball rules. The staff team had many easy shots for goals but missed, and the student’s team quickly turned the ball around allowing possession down in their goal end. The quick passage of plays were rewarded with several goals which sent the crowd into hysterics! The students had WON 5-4!!!!

Some highlights of the match were Ms Maria taunting Winnie before scoring a goal; Mr G’s dramatic injury to the knee (he soon stood up and continued playing); and of course, Mr John throwing his wig onto the court as he was sent off for too many penalties; a sensible decision made by referee Ms Naomi.

The game was played with very good sportsmanship and lots of humour both on and off the court. With the help of Mr Chris’ commentating, the student spectators who cheered both for the student and the staff teams were very loud and made the whole place feel very exciting. Thanks to the student netball team who did an amazing job on court and a special thanks to those staff members who came out for the team, particularly those who had no idea how to play – you all did a fantastic job and I can thankfully say that no staff were harmed during the match.

Bring on next term’s match!
